Last Week!!!

Reminders:
* The Kindergarten Awards are at 8:30 tomorrow Tuesday morning.
* The End of Year party is on Thursday at Karl Young Park.  We will walk over as a group.  Our class is responsible for bringing water toys and juice boxes.  (They switched us from water.)  Everyone is welcome.
*  Friday is an early dismissal day.  We will also celebrate our summer birthdays on this day.

Ocean Life

Today we completed our study of the orca whale.  We learned lots of interesting information that I'm sure your child would love to tell you about.
We will be studying various types of fish over the next few days and then move on to the study of the octopus and shark next week.
The sight words we are working on are BEEN, SEEN, COULD, WOULD and SHOULD.
In math we are reviewing addition, number patterns, and measuring.

Butterflies and Ants

This week we are talking about the life cycle of a butterfly. We will be reading many factual books about butterflies, labeling the parts of a butterfly, creating a butterfly life cycle, ordering events of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and writing about butterflies.
In math we are focusing on symmetry and measurement.

Next week we will continue the planner with a focus on ants. We will read fiction and nonfiction books about ants (icluding Two Bad Ants and Ant Cities), label an ant's body parts, discuss the life cycle of an ant, make our own room for Two Bad Ants and make our own Ant City. 
In math we will focus on patterns and graphing.


We have 3 fun events coming up.
1.  April 20- Kindergarten program at 6:30 pm in the cafeteria.  We will be performing BUGZ!!!  Our class will be the fireflies.  Your child will need handheld flashlight (not a laser pointer) that should be sent to school by Wednesday so that we can begin to practice with them.  The kids will also need a solid black t-shirt to wear on the night of the performance.
2.  April 26- Butterfly Museum Field Trip.  We will be needing chaperones, so please let me know if you are available.  
3.  April 29- Dia de los Ninos (Day of the Child)  This day will be packed with fun as the students rotate through the 6 kindergarten classrooms making puppets and maracas, eating tortillas, dancing, playing bingo (loteria), planting seeds, and hitting a pinata.  The tortillas and movie will be in our classroom.  If you are available that morning  sometime between 8:15 and 11:15, please sign up for a 30 minuted time slot.
We will also need people to bring bags of individually wrapped candy (25 of the same item), flour tortillas, corn tortillas, squeezable butter, and a pinata.  Please sign up to help out if you can or email me if you are unable to stop by the classroom.

ps  As you know, it has been an unusual and sad week for our class.  I want you to know how proud of your kids I am.  They showed so much concern and empathy for their classmate that I was almost brought to tears.  I wish you all could have heard our conversation.  It was incredibly heartwarming.


And as a last note, I want to thank you all for all you've done/plan to do for the two families in need at this time.  What a blessing it must be for them to be part of such a caring and giving community!  Y'all are the best!

Flowers and Seed Plants

This week we will continue our 5th PYP planner---What Goes Around Comes Around.

In math we will be focusing on addition, patterning, and matching.

Thank you so much to all of you who helped out at Field Day and sent in healthy snacks.  It was a great day!
Wednesday is class picture day.  Kindergarten is usually first, so please be on time!
Friday is our field trip to see Flat Stanley.  Please send a lunch in a throw away bag/container.  If you are chaperoning (Taylor, Haight, Malinsky, Waida and Hinrichs) please consider driving/carpooling because I'm not sure if we'll all fit on the bus!
Friday is also an early dismissal day.  Please plan accordingly.

What Goes Around Comes Around

This week we will finish our 4th PYP Planner and begin our 5th....What Goes Around Comes Around.
This is a science based planner focusing on life cycles.
On Wednesday we will begin discussing the life cycle of a frog.
Some of our activities include reading fiction and nonfiction books about frogs, ordering the life cycle of a frog, writing about frogs, and creating a book about frogs.
In math we are focusing on measuring, spatial awareness, visual discrimination and basic addition.
Our sight words are NOT, THAT and YOUR.
Other info:
* On Wednesday we will be visited by a makeup artist from Houston Grand Opera.
* Field Day is next Friday morning.  Please make sure you send your $3.25 for the t-shirt.
* Book Orders are due on Wednesday.

GO TEXAN!

Next week we will be continuing our Where In the World Are We From? planner with a focus on the state of Texas.

We will be reading several books about cowboys and Texas and doing the following activities.

*Alamo bean collage

*writing/illustrating favorite Texas thing

*creating a cactus hotel based on the book by the same name

*putting together a horse

The sight words we are focusing on are THEY, LOVE and OUT.
In math we will be doing activities involving measuring and time.

REMINDERS!

*Friday is GO TEXAN Day! Please wear Texan attire and bring a SACK LUNCH! We will watch the trail ride go by and eating a special snack---Frito pie and S'mores (Teddy Grahams, marshmallows, and chocolate chips!)  Thanks for all of you who signed up to send in an item for our treats!

*Thank you to everyone who sent in the items for the rice rotaion!

*Book Orders will be in the Tuesday folders this week.  Check them out.  There are a lot of good picks this month!

Where In The World Are You From?

Happy 101st Day of School!  We had a great celebration yesterday with lots of fun activities.  Thanks to all to all of you for your contributions.
This week and next we will continue our Where In The World planner.
We will do the following activities.
-Read aloud Me on the Map, students will create their own small books.
-Read aloud Mapping Pennies World, students learn the shape of the continents by making a small book.
-Read aloud We Dream of a World, students create their own page of a class book.
-Begin researching our countries of origins.  (If you have not sent in the questionaire, please do so as soon as possible.)  Also, if you can find a book about your country at your local library, please do so.  I will try to get as many as I can from the Twain library, but it is limited.
In Math we are focusing on more/less/equal, counting to 100 (sets of 10), patterning, and graphing.
Valentine's Day is Monday, February 14th.  We will be having a card exchange.  Please have your cards here by Friday, February 11.
FYI- I will be out of town next Monday and Tuesday (meeting my new nephews!).  Please remind your child to follow our daily rules and procedures even when I am not here. =)

Alma Flor Ada and Strega Nona

This week we will complete our Tell Me A Story Planner.  We will be doing an author study on Alma Flor Ada and also read many books from the Strega Nona series.  Some of the activities we will do are...
1) Read Jordi's Star and paint our own pond and star.
2) Read The Gold Coin and write about what we would do with a golden coin.
3) Read The Rooster Who Went to His Uncle's Wedding and sequence the events of the story.
4) Read The Malachite Palace and make a friendship quilt.
5) Read The Three Golden Oranges and make our own orange tree.

This week we are out of LDC so we will pick back up with journal writing.  I sent home some extra journals so that you could practice at home.  If you are monitoring your child when they are writing at home, some things you might point out are spaces between words, using only one capital letter per sentence, and taking time to form letters correctly.  When your child has filled up his or her journal, send it back to school to receive a prize.  This may take a month or more.

Our sight words this week are OR, HAD and UP.

In math we will continue learning about measuring and move in to ordinal numbers.

Other Important Information:
- This week we will have a Positive Works pep rally on Friday.  Please send your child to school in a blue uniform shirt.
- Book Orders are due on Wednesday.  FYI I saw a pack of Sight Word Readers that may be helpful if your child is struggling with memorizing the sight words.  This is the hardest part for those kiddos on level 3 because these words can't be sounded out.
- Fairy Tale Village Home Project---Look for info in the Tuesday folder.
- Here are some dates of interest.  They are not all set in stone, but should be pretty accurate.  I will continue to add to the list as things get scheduled.

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year!  I hope you all had a wonderful and restful winter break and are ready for an exciting and eventful semester in KINDERGARTEN!
Over the next 2 weeks we will be studying fairy tales.  We will read various versions of the 3's---TheThree Bears, Three Billy Goats Gruff, and The Three Little Pigs.  Some of our activities will be 1) Make a story board for the Three Little Pigs, 2) 3 Pigs listening activity, 3) Too Hot/ Too Cold activity, 4) Make our own Billy Goats book, 4) Make a Goldilocks class book, and 5) Create and describe our own troll.
We will also being going to LDC this week and next.
Our sight words will be AS, ON, UP, YES, OR and ALL.
In math we will focus on geometry (solid and flat figures) and measurement.
REMINDER- Friday is an early dismissal day.
